NASA has known since at least 2012 that Mars was subjected to a massive nuclear attack at some point in the distant past due to the massive amount of Zenon 129 present in its topsoil. An artificial nuclear explosion is the only known process that can produce so much of that element. The date of 300 million years ago is subjective and based on the isotope's known rate of decay and assumptions about how much there was to begin with, if you start with less then the date can be much more recent. Also the assumption that it was caused by two really big nukes over specific areas of Mars' northern hemisphere, the same effect could have been caused by multiple small airbursts like a MIRV bombardment in a precise pattern to sterilize those specific areas. Also using neutron bombs as opposed to conventional nukes potentially changes the interpretation as well. This fits well with the idea that an advanced precivilization in our solar system fell in some kind of war or conflict near the end of the Younger Dryas about 12,500 years ago.
